The range and diversity of Audra's work as a performer is unparalleled. Audra has received seven Tony Awards, two Grammy Awards, as well as an Emmy Award. Audra McDonald, who won six Tony Awards in a row and two Grammy Awards in 2015 was named as one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People. The president Barack Obama also awarded her the National Medal of Arts -- America's highest honour to recognize achievements in the field. She was born into a musical family. McDonald grew up living in Fresno California and received her classical vocal training at the New York's Juilliard School. She was awarded her debut Tony Award in 1994 for the most outstanding performance by a Featured actress in a musical, Carousel, at Lincoln Center Theater. After four more years of being in the Broadway premieres of Master Class by Terrence M. McNally (1996) and Ragtime (1998) in 1998, she earned two additional Tony Awards. In 2004, she was awarded the fourth Tony for her role in the musical she played alongside Sean Diddy Combs in A Raisin in the Sun. In 2012, while she was the lead actor for the role of Porgy and Bess in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess she received her fifth Tony and won the first award in the leading actor category. When she won the sixth Tony Award in 2014 Billie Holiday's portrayal of the role Lady Day in Emerson's Bar & Grill has become Broadway's highest-rated production. In 2017, she performed in her West End London West End debut, and was also nominated for an Olivier Award. Not only did she set the record as the most awards in a competition category by an actor, she also became the first to receive awards in each of the four types of acting. Her credits in the theatre include The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (993) Henry IV (2004) and 110 in the Shade (707). Twelfth, Night was McDonald's Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut. Shuffle Along is The Making of the Musical Seduction in 1921 and the Drama That Followed. Frankie Johnny on the Clair de Lune. and Ohio State Murders. McDonald first made her television debut as a drama actor in her role on the Peabody Award winner CBS series Having Our Say - The Delany Sisters' First 100 years. In 1999, she co-starred with Kathy Bates and Victor Garber on the ABC/Disney television version of Annie. And in 2000, she appeared as a recurring on NBC's popular program Law & Order Special Victims Unit. McDonald won the first Emmy for her performance as a character in her role in the HBO version of the Pulitzer Prize winning play Wit directed by Mike Nichols, starring Emma Thompson. In 2003, she returned to television, this time in Mister Sterling produced by Emmy Award-winning Lawrence O'Donnell Jr., starring Josh Brolin. In 2006, she joined WB's The Bedford Diaries. The following year, she became a recurring actor on NBC's Kidnapped. In 2016, McDonald was nominated for the fourth Emmy Award for her performance in HBO's Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill, a film-special. The Bite is a drama featuring six episodes that are based on an epidemic, produced through Spectrum Originals & CBS Studios. McDonald starred in the show with Taylor Schilling & Steven Pasquale. McDonald initially played U.S. lawyer Liz Lawrence (now Liz Reddick), in the CBS legal action thriller The Good Wife, in 2009. In 2018 she reprised her role on The Good Fight for Paramount+ as a regular in the series. Her performance received three Critics Choice Award Nominations. The actress also appeared on Julian Fellowes historical drama The Gilded Age.
